Could a Novel Light Therapy Help People?

The National Institute of Health awarded Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai by approving a 5-year grant focused solely on 40 Hz light therapy. The project will use pulses of light to focus on enhancing sleep in patients while another focus is boosting gamma waves. For Dr. Mariana Figueiro, project lead on the study, the purpose is to see how light can help alleviate some of the problems associated with Alzheimer’s and increase healthy brain waves. The study is titled “The Use of Rhythmic Light Therapy to Entrain Gamma Oscillations and the Circadian System in Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD)” and will be ongoing for five years with participants who have early-stage Alzheimer’s and mild-cognitive impairment.
