Can Light Therapy Improve Sleep, Mood, and Memory?

Light therapy is a promising area of research, with potential to help various brain disorders where other therapies have so-far failed. Over the years scientists (who call it photobiomodulation) have made extraordinary progress in understanding the pathology of cognitive decline and memory loss and finding new ways of early detection. While millions of families are impacted by age-related memory loss, there is still no known cure.  But continuing research shows promise with photobiomodulation.

One of the most common biomarkers of cognitive decline is an unusual build up of plaque in the brain. Clinical trials have focused on treatments that can clear plaque from the brain and reduce white matter atrophy. One of the most promising advances in this area is something so simple it seems too good to be true. That approach is a noninvasive, drug-free flashing light.

In clinical trials, using 40Hz light neuroscientists found that after a few weeks of only one hour per day exposure they saw restoration of neural activity to improve cognition, additionally,  neural connectivity and cell function dramatically improved. This reduced confusion, memory loss, and mood swings.

As scientists continue to unlock more about the brain and how it protects memories, manages sleep and controls mood, what can we do at home to address our own brain health and wellness?

Sometimes we have to remind ourselves that simple solutions can have a huge impact on well-being. For example, we know that drinking water is good for us. Getting a good night’s sleep is also good. Socializing and being physically active – good and good.

Today’s baby boomers are focused on habits they can adopt in between doctor’s visits. This population stands to benefit the most from emerging, home-health technologies. And contrary to popular belief, more and more older adults are using smart home technologies, and other health innovations to enhance their mental and physical health. Part of that trend includes adopting new technologies and drug-free approaches, like 40Hz light. We designed BEACON40 lights to cater to the unique needs of this technology-embracing group. BEACON40 lights can be used easily, at home as part of a daily routine to boost cognitive health and increase the ability to think clearly, learn, build memories, and maintain an active and engaged life.
