7 Simple Ways to Show Support for World Alzheimer’s Day

Shared knowledge is the key to achieving change. Only through the expansion and evolution of our collective knowledge about Alzheimer’s disease will we change the stigma for Alzheimer’s families and change the trajectory of the global Alzheimer’s epidemic.

September 21st is World Alzheimer’s Day, a day Alzheimer’s organizations collectively focus their efforts to raise awareness of this devastating disease and its effects on so many lives. The lack of awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and related forms of dementia is a global problem.

We’re all able to support this effort in our own ways. If you’re asking yourself, “What can I do?” Here’s a quick list of actionable activities for you to explore.

1. Share your story

One of the most powerful ways to combat the stigma around Alzheimer’s is to share your story. These shared experiences remind us that we are not alone. Share your story on social media using the hashtag #endAlz or at Hilarity For Charity .

2. Create a team for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

This year, The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the largest coordinated event to end Alzheimer’s. There are walks planned in every state and almost every city. You can choose to create and lead your own team or join an existing team.

3. Connect with loved ones fighting dementia.

For many battling dementia, there is comfort in the routine of social engagements.  Rather than plan for a big coordinated, family brunch or dinner to connect with loved ones, it may be easier and as beneficial to establish more frequent micro-events. Phone calls and texts are perfect to remind loved ones of your affection throughout the day.  Short conversations can be easier for a person who has dementia because they are less tiring and there’s less pressure to remember things and sustain a conversation.

The lack of awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and related forms of dementia is a global problem.

4. Change your profile on social media

Add a frame to your Facebook profile to show your support for Alzheimer’s Awareness Day and to raise awareness for the cause. Include your team or family in your picture to show that we are not alone.

5. Do good while you shop

You can now support the Alzheimer’s associations through Amazon Smile on the Amazon app for iOS and Android. When you shop through Amazon Smile you can choose an Alzheimer’s organization and Amazon will donate a percent of your shopping purchase. There’s absolutely no cost to you.

6. Engage local government

Write a letter or make a call to your Congressperson and let them know that you support government funds being directed to Alzheimer’s research. Researchers are continuing to make progress on working toward a cure or new breakthrough in Alzheimer’s treatment and they need funding to achieve these goals.

7. Make a donation

Make a financial contribution to support Alzheimer’s research. Alzheimer’s research is largely underfunded and researchers are always looking for new ways to raise funds to continue their work. Make a financial contribution at any scale to an Alzheimer’s research organization and know your money is going to make a difference.
